Alex de Sherbinin is a senior researcher at the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), a research and data center of the Earth Institute at Columbia University that advances understanding of how humans affect and manage the environment, and in turn, how environmental variability and change affect society. Mr. de Sherbinin is a geographer whose research interests focus on the human dimensions of global environmental change from local to global scales. He has published widely on a range of topics. Prior to joining CIESIN he served as a Population-Environment Fellow with the Social Policy Program of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Gland, Switzerland, and a Population Geographer at the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) in Washington, DC. He also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mauritania, West Africa. Mr. de Sherbinin studied geography at Dartmouth College and Syracuse University.
